Newton N. Minow papers, 1936-1990s.

Correspondence, clippings, speeches, reports, legal documents and other personal papers of Newton N. Minow, Chicago lawyer and former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Includes papers, 1952-1968, primarily newsclippings, speech transcripts and spiral-bound scrapbooks relating to Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson, whom Minow served as administrative assistant (1952-1953); the Illinois Business and Professional Men's Committee for Kennedy-Johnson; the Federal Communications Commission, ca. 1961. Business and professional papers include various documents (many photocopies) relative to Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc.'s acquisition of assets of G. and C. Merriam Company and related financing, 1964 Aug. 10-Oct. 27. Also present are materials relative to acquisition of 90% of the Old Orchard Shopping Center in Skokie (Ill.) by BKCG Private Acquisitions Group, Ltd., 1976 Dec.-1977 Jan. Includes a scrapbook containing photocopies of documents plus 11 color photographs of Old Orchard presented to Newton N. Minow, 1977 May 1. Papers, 1981-1983, include files on his various directorships (Chicago Educational Television Association, Chicago Symphony, Field Enterprises, Northwestern University, and Rand Corporation, among others) consisting of general correspondence topically arranged, membership files for various organizations, and personal speeches and interviews. Papers relative to Mr. Minow's service, 1991-1992, on the Presidential Commission on the Assignment of Women in the Armed Forces include memos and correspondence with other members of the commission and with various consultants; files on the Commission's meetings (April-August 1992) containing agendas, reports, and Mr. Minow's notes; Mr. Minow's position paper on the issue; a survey conducted during August of 1992 of Sidley & Austin personnel: Should Women in the Armed Forces be Assigned to Combat Duty?; and binders containing reference materials used by the commissioners. Also present are one folder of Josephine Baskin Minow material from her grammar school days (the Nettlehorst School, Chicago), 1936-1940, and papers 1966-1974 of Josephine Minow primarily containing board meeting minutes, newsclippings, and miscellaneous correspondence relating to Juvenile Protective Association (Mrs. Minow served as president, 1973-1975); WTTW-Channel 11 auctions, including a Celebrity Guest Register for the 1968 WTTW-Channel 11 Auction containing 13 pages of signatures (April 22-26) of many well-known Chicagoans in a spiral volume inscribed to Mr. & Mrs. Newton N. Minow, April 28, 1968. Also present are class schedules, outlines, and papers from courses taught at Northwestern University in the 1960s-1970s; printers sheets of a biography of Adlai Stevenson II, by John B. Martin; and one (1) phonograph record--"Sarge...How It Really Was", R. Sargent Shriver's 1972 Vice Presidential Campaign.
